Moderna’s COVID vaccine has been updated over time to target new virus variants. First introduced in December 2020, the original COVID mRNA vaccines aimed to protect against the original SARS-CoV-2 virus. They were replaced in September 2022 by “bivalent” vaccines designed to prevent both the original virus, and Omicron variants BA.4 and BA.5. New updated vaccines in September 2023 replaced the bivalent shots with ones targeting the XBB lineage of the Omicron variant.
A Yale Medicine expert explains whether EG.5 is more transmissible or severe than previous Omicron subvariants.
There will be better protection against severe disease, hospitalization, and death from COVID-19 in the coming months now that newly updated (2023–2024 formula) mRNA COVID vaccines are available. The new shots are expected to keep more people from getting seriously ill with the virus through the winter, when infections and hospitalizations tend to tick upwards. And unlike the spring booster that targeted people ages 60 and older, these updated vaccines are for everyone ages 6 months and older.
Will this COVID shot protect against Omicron strains EG.5 and BA.2.86?

messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA), Ribonucleic acid (abbreviated RNA) is a nucleic acid present in all living cells that has structural similarities to DNA. Unlike DNA, however, RNA is most often single-stranded. An RNA molecule has a backbone made of alternating phosphate groups and the sugar ribose, rather than the deoxyribose found in DNA

cholesterol, 1. Cholesterol hp is a high-purity parenteral pharmaceutical excipient produced in accordance with GMP guidelines. US DMF number is 024780, NMPA registration number is F20170000106.
2 Different from the animal tissue extraction method commonly used in domestic to produce cholesterol, CHO HP is made from lanolin with semi-synthetic method.
3. The product purity is high (NLT 99%), and there will be no virus contamination of animal tissues. It has been used in multiple marketed liposome products internationally for a long time.
1,2-distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine [DSPC]), Distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-PC (1,2-DSPC) is a phospholipid containing the saturated long-chain (18:0) stearic acid inserted at the sn-1 and sn-2 positions. It is commonly used in the generation of micelles, liposomes, and other types of artificial membranes.
